An interesting thing about Farmington, Maine Highschool grad Governor Janet Mills 'suspending' her campaign for US Senator is that she has not yet conceded to nor endorsed Hotchkiss alum Graham Platner.
She is still available to vote for on the June 9th ranked choice voting Democratic primary and early voting or mail in ballots.
She simply stated that her campaign ran out of money, an all too common occurance for those of us living under Conservative oligarch controlled America. Also interestingly, President Trump claimed publicly that he would 'end her political career', which led me to wonder why Graham Platner announced his candidacy for the US Senate a short time later. If people think she doesn't actually want to represent Mainers in the US Senate, remember, she still has not officially withdrawn from the race and she says, like Rachel Platten, that she's still got a lot of fight left in her.
She has pitched a great game for us so far and now it's our turn to knock in some runs at the ballot batter's box.
Governor Mills helped poor people like me greatly during our plethora of Republican national emergencies. With oil inflation so high, I cannot afford to help fund her campaign, so all I can do to repay her is promote what she did to make Maine a better place for everyone - and I encourage all of her supporters who love Maine to, also.
'It ain't over 'till it's over' - Yogi Berra.
Her list of accomplishments as governor are myriad.
Governor Mills' leadership helped give Maine the 2nd best Covid response domain ranking during the epidemic, with the 4th best Covid vaccination rate in the nation.
Aside from her contentious decisions to make Van Buren eligible again for a new data center and signing the millionaires' tax into law, which were both good for rural Maine families & businesses but came at a high financial and political cost to her campaign, she implemented free community college for Maine residents, acquired $25 million for new tech business research while ensuring free government funded meals for every preschool through grade 12 student (hunger is making me salivate at just the thought of those Ellios like school lunch pizzas !)
As Maine's Attorney General, she won the VW emissions scandal lawsuit (Hitler created VW) which funded Maine's massive tax rebates for Mainers buying EV cars and bicycles through Efficiency Maine.
Our friend Alphena got a bunch of discounted LED lightbulbs under the Gov Mills' promoted Efficiency Maine and for some weird reason her electric bill started billing her negative amounts - they were paying her to use electricity !
Governor Mills secured $43 million to help Mainers install high efficiency heat pump water heaters and $2 million for ways for transportation challenged people to get to their jobs. Her Child Care Affordability Program invested $145 million in early education and day care, and she passed a law raising the minimum teachers' salary to $50,000 by 2029.
She took $70 million from the Rainy Day Fund as part of her American Dream Affordability Agenda to finance the construction of 825 new homes in Maine. Her Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan created 42,000 job opportunities in Maine, giving Maine 51 months of below 4% unemployment. Her Act to Protect Health Care Coverage for Maine Families keeps health insurers from denying coverage because of pre existing conditions.
BTW I just found out that Maine was ranked 2nd best in the nation for quality of life in 2025 by CNBC.
And this year Maine is ranked the 3rd best state for women by Wallethub.
I could go on and on, and I'm tempted to, but most Mainers are already aware of all the great things Governor Mills did for Maine - because many of them are still alive because of the things she did while Governor..
All I really have to mention is that they forgot to put the 'quit' in Governor Mills whose perseverance served Maine so well during our stressful times and now her supporters can return the favor by stepping up to the ranked choice voting plate and still save the game for her by ranking her in the June 9th Democratic primary.
